A tragic incident unfolded on September 5, 2023, when Tran Son Kiet, a 30-year-old worker, was killed after being hit by a vehicle on National Highway 1 in Lam Dong. Kiet was part of a maintenance crew working on the highway when the accident occurred around 1:30 PM.
At the time, Kiet was clearing debris on the Ong Tam Bridge in Duc Hoa village, Ham Thuan commune. A car driven by 29-year-old Le Hong Phuc, who hails from Dak Lak province, was traveling from Khanh Hoa to Dong Nai when it struck Kiet. Eyewitnesses reported that the impact threw Kiet onto the roadside.
His colleagues rushed to provide first aid and called for an ambulance to take him to Binh Thuan General Hospital, but unfortunately, he did not survive his injuries. Kiet was employed by the Saigon Infrastructure Development Investment Corporation, which was responsible for maintaining this section of National Highway 1.
At the time of the accident, there were two other passengers in the vehicle. Preliminary investigations by the police suggest that the driver failed to observe the road conditions, leading to the accident. A breathalyzer test indicated that Phuc had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.023 mg/l, and he tested negative for drugs.
The vehicle involved in the accident sustained significant damage, with a crumpled front and a shattered windshield. Warning cones were placed in the area where the workers were operating. Authorities have conducted an investigation, examining the scene, the victim's body, and reviewing surveillance footage, as well as interviewing the driver and others involved.
