Iran's Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei has recently outlined a strategic response to the economic warfare waged by the United States, which aims to isolate Tehran. In a statement made on August 28, Khamenei emphasized that boosting domestic production is crucial to resolving the country's economic issues and called for a gradual reduction of the US dollar's dominance in the Iranian economy.
Khamenei urged the government to pay serious attention to the intertwined economic and social challenges faced by the Iranian people, including inflation, unemployment, and the management of prices in goods and services. He stressed the need to promote economic growth, increase investment, and direct capital flows into essential and beneficial sectors.
He highlighted that the key to addressing these problems lies in increasingly focusing on domestic production. Khamenei pointed out that ensuring an adequate supply of essential and specialized goods is vital, advocating for a wise and reasonable use of imports only when domestic production falls short of meeting demand.
Moreover, he mentioned that encouraging production alongside managing imports and prices could gradually eliminate the economic shortcomings in Iran. Khamenei called for the implementation of technologies and initiatives proposed by young Iranian intellectuals, suggesting that timely application of these solutions could lead to significant advancements in agriculture, industry, telecommunications, education, and other fields.
He also praised the government's efforts during the ongoing conflict to provide essential goods and services, repair critical infrastructure damaged by sanctions, and manage energy supplies, despite increasingly severe sanctions and blockades. Khamenei has not appeared in public since his appointment earlier this year, with reports suggesting he sustained serious injuries from a US and Israeli attack on Iran. Nevertheless, he continues to issue written statements on important national issues.
This week, the Iranian rial fell to a record low against the US dollar in the free market, as the US imposed additional sanctions aimed at crippling Iran's economy. Amid stalled negotiations, former US President Donald Trump announced an unprecedented economic war to isolate Iran. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent also launched the "Economic Isolation Campaign" targeting Iran, describing it as a comprehensive economic assault on Iran's global financial links. He warned of severe consequences for countries maintaining economic relations with Iran, stating that the US would sanction any nation refusing to sever ties with Iran.
According to the latest data from the World Bank, Iran exports goods to 147 countries and imports from 114 countries.
