Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has firmly stated that holding elections in Ukraine during wartime poses significant risks that could jeopardize the nation's unity. In a recent briefing, he criticized calls for elections, particularly from former defense minister Mykhailo Fedorov, arguing that such a move could be catastrophic for the state.

Zelenskyy emphasized that with Russia amassing ballistic missiles and considering the mobilization of an additional 300,000 soldiers, the situation is too precarious for elections. He described the proposal as a 'tsunami for the state that will split Ukraine,' asserting that the focus should remain on ending the war and preserving Ukraine's independence.

Since the onset of martial law following Russia's full-scale invasion, elections have been suspended in Ukraine. Zelenskyy's term ended in May 2024, but there has been little public appetite for elections amidst the ongoing conflict. This changed when Fedorov, who was dismissed a month prior, publicly called for a new election, marking a significant challenge to Zelenskyy's authority.

While Zelenskyy remains opposed to elections under current conditions, he indicated that he would support them if specific conditions could ensure they are conducted safely and legitimately. This would involve military participation and the ability to hold polls without the threat of strikes or shelling.

In his comments, Zelenskyy also addressed the military situation, revealing that Russia possesses a stockpile of 600-630 high-speed ballistic missiles and is attempting to produce more. He noted the difficulties in securing the necessary air defense systems to protect Ukraine, including a request for 300 Patriot missiles to bolster defenses for the winter.

Zelenskyy has reached agreements with France and Germany for additional air defense systems, highlighting the ongoing need for international support. He called on the United States to contribute a small percentage of its missile stockpiles to aid Ukraine during this critical time.

As tensions escalate, Zelenskyy remains confident that Russia will not succeed in its efforts to capture more territory in eastern Ukraine, particularly in the cities of Kramatorsk and Sloviansk. He believes that any new mobilization efforts by Russia will ultimately fail.
