Su-57 Fighter Jet Fails to Protect Omsk Oil Refinery from Drones
The Russian Su-57 fighter jet was deployed during a recent drone attack on the Gazpromneft-ONPZ oil refinery

Ukrainian drones have launched a significant strike on the Omsk oil refinery, the largest in Russia, located deep in Siberia. This attack represents one of Ukraine's longest-range operations during the ongoing conflict, as confirmed by Kyiv’s military. Local Russian authorities have reported a fire at the refinery, which is approximately 2,700 kilometers from Ukrainian-held territory and near the Kazakhstan border.
Vitaly Khotsenko, the governor of the Omsk region, acknowledged the drone attack and noted that Russian air defenses managed to intercept most of the drones involved. Fortunately, there were no reported casualties, and emergency services are currently addressing the situation at the site.
In his nightly address, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy hailed the operation as an 'important achievement' for Ukraine’s armed forces, stating, 'Siberia, too, is now within reach of Ukrainian precision strikes.' The upgraded FP-1 drones, developed by the Ukrainian defense technology company Fire Point, were responsible for the attack, which they claim sets a record for drone strikes not only in Ukraine but globally.
In addition to the Omsk refinery, Ukraine's military targeted several other locations, including Russia’s Ust-Luga and Vysotsk ports on the Baltic Sea, as well as sites in the Kaluga and Yaroslavl regions. These actions come amid a series of retaliatory strikes by Russia, which have included missile and drone attacks on apartment buildings in Kyiv, resulting in numerous civilian casualties.
The timing of the drone strike is particularly notable, occurring just before a NATO summit in Turkey, where discussions on peace efforts are set to take place. Zelenskyy has urged NATO to enhance Ukraine’s air defense capabilities against Russian ballistic missiles, emphasizing the urgent need for improved protection for civilians.
As the conflict continues to escalate, Ukraine is seeking to solidify defense agreements with several NATO countries, highlighting its evolving role in international military cooperation. Meanwhile, Poland has announced significant military aid to Ukraine, reflecting ongoing support from European allies amidst the crisis.
