Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has made a significant change in military leadership by dismissing Oleksandr Syrsky as the commander of the Ukrainian armed forces. This decision comes in the wake of a political crisis triggered by the recent ousting of Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov. On July 21, Zelensky announced that Mykhailo Drapatyi, who currently serves as the commander of the Joint Forces, will take over as the new military commander.

In his announcement, Zelensky expressed gratitude to Syrsky and all Ukrainian fighters for their steadfast positions on the front lines. “I appreciate Oleksandr Syrsky and all our warriors for their solid positions on the front lines,” he stated. Drapatyi, upon his appointment, thanked the president and emphasized that serving Ukraine is always an honor for him.

Fedorov, who was recently dismissed, welcomed Zelensky's decision, believing it would bring “new hope” in the ongoing struggle against Russia. He described the change as a breath of fresh air and a new hope in the fight for justice and freedom.

Oleksandr Syrsky, who has been in command since 2024, is one of Ukraine's most experienced commanders and led the defense of Kyiv during the early stages of the conflict. However, doubts about his future arose last week when Fedorov was removed from his position, just six months after his appointment. Fedorov, who had a strong public following, had clashed with military leadership over modernization efforts and accused Syrsky of obstructing his ideas.

The dismissal of Fedorov has sparked protests across Ukraine, with many citizens expressing dissatisfaction over the lack of military reforms and calling for Syrsky's removal. Analysts suggest that Syrsky lacks the political clout to threaten Zelensky’s position, unlike his predecessor Valery Zaluzhny, who was also popular but was dismissed in 2024.

Despite the ongoing tensions, the Ukrainian military has recently made gains, slowing Russia's advances and launching long-range attacks that have inflicted losses on Moscow. Drapatyi, 43, previously served as the commander of Ukraine's ground forces and is known for his bravery during the conflict, including a notable incident in 2014 where he drove an armored vehicle through a separatist checkpoint in Mariupol.

This change marks the third military commander since the conflict with Russia began in early 2022, reflecting the ongoing challenges and shifts within Ukraine's military leadership.
