Strong Geyser Erupts in Gia Lai, Causing Erosion

A remarkable geological phenomenon has occurred in Thung village, located in the Chư Prông district of Gia Lai province, where a private well has started to erupt with strong jets of gas and water. This unusual event has raised safety concerns among local residents, as those who approach the area report feeling lightheaded due to the pressure of the gas.

On August 6, Phạm Ngọc Toàn, the Chairman of the Chư Prông People's Committee, stated that there is currently no definitive solution to manage the geyser, which has been attributed to excessive drilling by a local resident, Đ.X.H. The well was drilled deeper than its original depth of 160 meters in search of water for irrigation, leading to the unexpected eruption.

Toàn emphasized that sealing the well with concrete is not a viable option due to the high gas pressure, which could pose further risks to the community. As a precaution, local authorities have recommended that the family place warning signs and restrict access to the area to ensure public safety. Residents have been advised to stay away from the geyser, as it continues to erupt with no signs of abating.

In recent weeks, the geyser has not only been shooting gas and water over 10 meters into the air but has also caused significant erosion, widening the well's opening from 2 meters to over 4 meters. This spectacle has drawn curiosity from many onlookers, prompting the family to enforce safety measures to prevent accidents.

In light of the ongoing situation, the Chư Prông People's Committee has submitted a report to the provincial Department of Agriculture and Environment, requesting a thorough investigation and assessment to provide appropriate management solutions. Since 2023, four similar geysers have been recorded in the area, indicating a potential trend that requires professional evaluation to ensure safe groundwater extraction practices.
