A landslide triggered by heavy rainfall occurred at the My Hang Tau hydropower plant in Lao Cai, Vietnam, on August 6, leading to one person being reported missing. The incident took place in the Chế Tạo commune, where a local resident, while foraging for bamboo shoots, was swept away by the landslide.

According to Giàng A Chang, the Chairman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee in Chế Tạo, local forces are working alongside residents to search for the missing individual, who was last seen conversing with a security guard at the dam just minutes before the landslide struck. The victim, who did not have a mobile phone, has not been reachable by family members, raising concerns that they may have fallen victim to the disaster.

In addition to the human toll, the landslide has caused significant damage to property and infrastructure. A 16-foot container belonging to the hydropower plant, which contained a motorcycle, was swept into the reservoir. Furthermore, a wooden house used for livestock farming by a local official was also lost to the floodwaters.

Approximately five hectares of farmland have been severely affected by the landslide, and the road from Pú Vá village to the hydropower plant has been blocked, disrupting local transportation.

In response to the disaster, the local government has mobilized the Civil Defense Committee and other local forces to urgently search for the missing person, assess the damage, and assist residents in recovering from the incident. Authorities are maintaining a 24-hour watch on weather developments and are prepared to deploy resources to address ongoing risks of heavy rainfall and further landslides, ensuring the safety of residents and the restoration of normalcy in the area.
