Ho Chi Minh City has recently implemented a free bus service for specific groups, including seniors aged 60 and above, people with disabilities, war veterans, and children under six. This initiative, however, has sparked questions among residents regarding the need for a public transport card, especially for those who are already eligible for free rides.

The Public Transport Management Center of Ho Chi Minh City has introduced a registration system for the Public Transport Card (PTC) to authenticate those entitled to the 100% fare exemption. Many citizens are curious about the benefits of this card and whether it is mandatory for those who qualify for free travel.

A representative from the center explained that the PTC is part of a broader effort to modernize the public transport system, which includes the integration of an automatic fare collection (AFC) system across all bus services and the metro line. The automatic gates at metro stations and buses utilize chip technology and QR codes, which cannot be verified manually. Therefore, the system requires a card or electronic identification to register free rides and grant access through the gates.

Besides its technical advantages, the PTC significantly simplifies the process for priority groups, allowing them to avoid carrying multiple important documents like national ID cards, pension books, or disability certificates, which are prone to loss or damage. Now, individuals only need to carry a single card and can pass through the gates in less than a second.

This system not only speeds up the boarding process, reducing congestion during peak hours, but also plays a crucial role in the city's management. Data collected from card usage helps the center accurately track the actual number of trips taken by each group, enabling transparent and precise budget allocation for subsidies to transport operators, thereby preventing financial losses.

Concerns have been raised about the necessity of obtaining a card to benefit from free rides. The Public Transport Management Center has clarified that while the PTC is beneficial, it is not the only means of verification for eligible individuals. They can still use alternative valid forms of identification, such as chip-enabled ID cards, VNeID accounts, bank cards, e-wallets, or other documents proving their eligibility.

On August 5, the center noted a significant increase in registration applications for the PTC, placing considerable pressure on their processing system. To alleviate crowding and reduce waiting times, officials advised residents who do not urgently need to use the automatic gates to delay their registration.

For those who wish to register for the card, they must provide personal information, a clear photo, and relevant documents proving eligibility. Registration can be done through the MultiGo app, online at the designated website, or in person at the Saigon Bus Station. The center also offers assistance for seniors or individuals who may struggle with technology.

Once registered, individuals can easily track the status of their application through the MultiGo app or the provided link, ensuring a smooth process for obtaining their Public Transport Card.
