The National Assembly's Standing Committee has given the green light for the establishment of two new cities in Vietnam: Quang Ninh and Bac Ninh. This decision was made during a meeting held on August 4, 2026, where the committee discussed the resolutions for the new cities.

According to Minister of Home Affairs Nguyen Tien Hai, the government proposed the establishment of Quang Ninh city based on its current natural area, population scale, and administrative units. Once established, Quang Ninh will cover an area of 6,231.27 square kilometers, with a population of approximately 1.52 million people, and will consist of 54 administrative units, including 30 wards and 22 communes.

Similarly, Bac Ninh city will also be established with a natural area of 4,713.75 square kilometers and a population of 3.98 million. It will include 99 administrative units, comprising 54 communes and 45 wards. The resolutions for both cities are set to take effect on September 1 and September 20, 2026, respectively.

During the meeting, the committee emphasized the importance of these new cities in promoting local economic growth. They urged the local governments of Quang Ninh and Bac Ninh to focus on resource allocation to develop these areas into economic growth centers. The committee also discussed the need for efficient organizational structures within the new cities to ensure effective governance.

In addition to the establishment of the cities, the committee approved the creation of 12 wards in Bac Ninh, which will also take effect on September 20, 2026. The wards will be formed based on the current administrative structure of 12 communes in Bac Ninh province.
