15 Provinces Prepare for Heavy Rain and Flash Floods

Fifteen provinces in northern Vietnam are on high alert as the national weather forecasting center predicts significant rainfall over the coming days. From July 16 to 18, areas including the northern mountainous regions and Quang Ninh are expected to experience rainfall ranging from 80 to 150 mm, with some locations potentially receiving over 300 mm. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has advised local authorities to implement emergency measures to prepare for possible flooding and landslides.

According to the forecasts, a major rainfall event is anticipated, with intensities exceeding 100 mm in just three hours in certain areas. Starting from July 19, additional rainfall of 20 to 40 mm is expected, with some regions experiencing heavy downpours exceeding 100 mm.

In response to these forecasts, the National Civil Defense Steering Committee has called upon 15 provinces, including Lai Chau, Lao Cai, Dien Bien, Son La, Phu Tho, Tuyen Quang, Cao Bang, Thai Nguyen, Lang Son, Hanoi, Bac Ninh, Quang Ninh, Hai Phong, Hung Yen, and Ninh Binh, to be proactive in their flood response strategies. This includes monitoring weather updates closely and ensuring timely communication of risks to residents.

Local governments are urged to mobilize resources for evacuating residents from vulnerable areas, particularly those near rivers and low-lying regions prone to severe flooding and landslides. They are also tasked with clearing drainage systems and preparing local emergency response teams to assist affected communities.

In addition, authorities are advised to ensure the safety of transportation routes, monitor mining sites, and manage water reservoirs effectively, especially smaller hydroelectric and irrigation dams that may be at risk. Public information campaigns on safety measures during heavy rains and floods are also recommended to help residents minimize potential damage.

As the situation develops, the focus remains on safeguarding lives and property against the impending severe weather conditions.
