New Regulations for Pickup Trucks in Vietnam

The Traffic Police Department of Vietnam has issued important updates regarding the regulations for pickup trucks, effective from July 1, 2026. According to the new decree, pickup trucks with a total weight not exceeding 3,500 kg will be organized in traffic like passenger cars. This change aims to facilitate traffic flow for both citizens and businesses while enhancing traffic management efficiency.

Under the new rules, pickup trucks and vans under 3.5 tons will be allowed to operate in areas and during times designated for passenger vehicles, unless specific restrictions are imposed by authorities. However, the Traffic Police Department emphasizes that this adjustment pertains solely to traffic organization and does not alter the classification of these vehicles.

Pickup trucks will still be classified as commercial vehicles under existing registration and inspection laws. This means that while they may enjoy the same traffic privileges as passenger cars, they remain subject to all legal obligations associated with commercial vehicles.

The adjustment is part of a broader effort to align traffic regulations with practical realities and improve road safety. The classification of pickup trucks will continue to follow existing guidelines, ensuring that they are recognized appropriately within the legal framework.

In summary, the new regulations are designed to enhance convenience for drivers of pickup trucks and vans while maintaining the necessary legal distinctions that govern vehicle operation on public roads.
