Hoàng Văn Khánh Arrested for Drug Trafficking
On June 23, police in Nghe An province arrested 64-year-old Hoàng Văn Khánh for illegal drug trafficking.

A shocking incident has emerged involving a 26-year-old flight attendant from Thai Airways who was arrested at Melbourne Airport on June 25 for allegedly transporting more than 1 kilogram of heroin. The Australian customs authorities discovered the illicit drugs concealed in 12 bags that she was carrying after her flight from Bangkok landed.
The estimated value of the seized heroin is approximately 500,000 AUD (around 347,000 USD). Following her arrest, the flight attendant was charged with drug importation and possession, and she was denied bail. Preliminary investigations revealed that she had posted in a social media group seeking opportunities to transport goods abroad. Subsequently, she was contacted by a Facebook account named 'Rose,' who offered her 8,800 baht (about 240 USD) to carry the bags to Australia.
Authorities from Thailand and Australia are collaborating on the investigation, particularly focusing on whether the flight attendant was aware of the drugs hidden in her luggage. The incident has raised concerns about international drug trafficking networks potentially exploiting flight crews, who are often less suspected, to transport illegal substances to lucrative markets.
In response to this alarming situation, the Thai government has called for enhanced security measures at airports. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul noted that at least six individuals departing from Thailand have been prosecuted for drug smuggling in the first half of 2026, which negatively impacts the country’s image. Officials have stated that they will adopt a 'trust no one' policy, requiring pilots, flight attendants, and ground staff to undergo the same security checks as regular passengers.
Increased use of sniffer dogs, additional inspections for high-risk flights, and stricter background checks and drug tests for airport personnel are among the measures being implemented. According to the Office of Narcotics Control Board (ONCB) in Thailand, drug trafficking organizations often smuggle heroin from neighboring countries into Thailand before disguising it among ordinary goods for transport to Australia and other markets. Just in the last days of June and early July, authorities seized over 24 kg of heroin in five shipments prepared for export, indicating that these trafficking operations remain complex and active.
