Trần Diệp Tuấn Reappointed as Head of Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine

Professor Trần Diệp Tuấn has returned to his position as the Head of Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy, following his appointment by the Ministry of Health. This decision, formalized in Decision No. 1966, takes effect from July 1, 2026, until he reaches the mandatory retirement age.

Born in 1967 in Kiên Giang, Professor Tuấn is recognized as a leading expert in pediatrics and medical education in Vietnam. He graduated as a medical doctor specializing in pediatrics in 1989 and completed his pediatric specialist training in 1997. In 2003, he earned his PhD from the University of Tokyo, Japan, and in 2005, he finished a postdoctoral research program in neurology at the University of Michigan, USA. He was recognized as an associate professor in 2009 and became a full professor in pediatrics in 2020.

Professor Tuấn is fluent in English, Japanese, and Chinese, which aids his professional activities. Since 1989, he has held various positions at the university, including lecturer, deputy head, head, chairman of the university council, and secretary of the party committee. Before his reappointment as head, he served as the secretary of the university's party committee.

In the realm of scientific research, Professor Tuấn has published over 120 scientific papers, with 72 appearing in prestigious international journals. He has also authored and contributed to numerous textbooks and reference books for medical training. His research covers areas such as neurology, pediatrics, medical education, and healthcare workforce reform, with publications in international journals like The Lancet Regional Health - Western Pacific, BMJ Global Health, and PLoS One.

In addition to his research contributions, Professor Tuấn has played a significant role in training healthcare professionals. He has successfully supervised many doctoral candidates and has been a member of the medical professor council for multiple terms, as well as the university's professor council. He has received several international scientific awards, including the John J. Bonica Fellow Award from the International Association for the Study of Pain, the Outstanding Fellow Award from the International Brain Research Organization, and a research fellowship from the National Institutes of Health in collaboration with the World Health Organization.

Professor Tuấn's reappointment comes after the previous head, Associate Professor Ngô Quốc Đạt, was appointed as the head of Phạm Ngọc Thạch University of Medicine. The current leadership team at Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy includes Professor Trần Diệp Tuấn as head, with Associate Professors Vương Thị Ngọc Lan and Nguyễn Văn Chinh serving as deputy heads.
