Severe Heatwave Hits Northern and Central Vietnam
Vietnam's Northern and Central regions are experiencing extreme heat, with temperatures soaring above 40

The severe heatwave affecting many regions in Vietnam has brought temperatures in Hanoi to alarming levels, reaching as high as 39.8°C. The National Center for Meteorological Forecasting has indicated that this extreme weather will continue, particularly in the northern mountainous areas. The forecast for June 24-25 suggests that temperatures will remain high, with some areas experiencing extreme heat conditions.
On June 23, several locations recorded exceptionally high temperatures, including Phu Ly at 39.2°C and Tam Ky at 40.3°C. The forecast indicates that from June 24-25, the northern mountainous regions, excluding Lai Chau and Dien Bien, will continue to experience intense heat, with maximum temperatures ranging from 36-38°C, and some areas exceeding 38°C.
In the lowland areas of Northern Vietnam, including Hanoi, temperatures are expected to peak between 38-40°C, with some regions potentially exceeding 40°C. The humidity is notably low, ranging from 45-50%, which increases the risk of fire hazards due to heightened electricity consumption.
Starting June 26, the heat in Northern Vietnam is predicted to ease slightly. However, the heatwave from Thanh Hoa to Da Nang and eastern provinces like Quang Ngai and Dak Lak may persist for several more days. Authorities are warning that the combination of extreme heat and low humidity raises the risk of fires in residential areas and potential forest fires.
Residents are advised to limit outdoor activities during peak heat hours to prevent dehydration and heat exhaustion. It’s important to note that the temperatures reported are measured under standard meteorological conditions, and the actual perceived temperatures outdoors may be 2-4°C higher, especially in urban areas with concrete and asphalt surfaces.
As the weather continues to be a concern, the public is urged to stay informed about the ongoing heat conditions and take necessary precautions to protect their health.
