HCMC – The 13th Party Central Committee (PCC) today agreed to let State President Nguyen Xuan Phuc quit as member of the Politburo and of the PCC, the Vietnam News Agency reported.

The PCC called a meeting in Hanoi today to consider a formal request by the President to retire and pull out of all his positions as Politburo member, PCC member, State President of Vietnam, and Chairman of the Council for National Defense and Security in the 2021-2026 tenure.

In his capacity as prime minister in the 2016-2021 tenure, he produced important results in the leadership, instruction and management of the country’s Covid-19 pandemic prevention and control effort.

However, as head of government, he was held politically responsible because multiple officials, including two deputy prime ministers and three ministers, committed serious wrongdoing and violations.

recently quit as deputy prime ministers. Meanwhile, two ministers and many other senior officials have been charged with criminal offenses.

Fully aware of his responsibility before the Party and the public, President Phuc tendered his resignation.

He was elected State President on April 5, 2021. Before that, he served as Prime Minister (2016-2021), Deputy PM, Minister-Chairman of the Government Office, Vice Chairman of the Government Office, Deputy Head of the Government Inspectorate, and Chairman of Quang Nam Province.
