HCMC – The 15th National Assembly (NA), the nation’s legislature, has announced it will hold an extraordinary session on Wednesday, January 18, to decide a key personnel matter.

Based on the Constitution, the law on organization of the NA and the NA session organizing rules, the NA Standing Committee has decided to call the third extraordinary session of the NA in the 15th tenure on the afternoon of January 18, the NA said on its website (quochoi.vn).

The NA extraordinary session comes shortly after the 13th Party Central Committee (PCC) at its extraordinary meeting on Tuesday, January 17, approved a formal request by Nguyen Xuan Phuc to retire and as Politburo member, PCC member, State President of Vietnam, and Chairman of the Council for National Defense and Security in the 2021-2026 tenure.

In his capacity as prime minister in the 2016-2021 tenure, he produced important results in the leadership, instruction and management of the country’s Covid-19 pandemic prevention and control effort.

However, as head of government, he was held politically responsible because multiple officials, including two deputy prime ministers and three ministers, committed serious wrongdoing and violations.
