Severe Flooding Leaves Homes in Disarray in Ho Chi Minh City

In the aftermath of heavy rains on October 5, 2023, residents of Tan Khanh ward in Ho Chi Minh City are facing significant challenges as they return to their homes, which have been severely affected by flooding. Water levels rose to nearly two meters, inundating approximately 20 hectares around the dredging project of Suoi Cai and leaving several homes submerged.

Emergency services were deployed to rescue 12 individuals trapped in areas where water levels exceeded 1.5 meters. As of the morning of October 6, access roads to the residential areas and agricultural land remained deeply flooded, isolating many houses in low-lying regions.

One resident, 40-year-old Thach Ray, described the harrowing experience of the flood. He indicated a water mark of 1.7 meters on his home's pillar, recounting how his family had to flee as the water quickly rose during dinner. "Within 15 minutes, the water reached nearly one meter, collapsing walls and forcing us to escape to the main road," he said. The flood swept away their refrigerator, television, and even his daughter's school books.

As the waters recede, residents are left to sift through the debris. Furniture, clothing, and personal belongings are scattered throughout the area, with mud covering living spaces. Another resident, 50-year-old Vo Thi Bich, shared her experience of seeking refuge with her children on higher ground as the floodwaters surged. "I've lived here for nearly five years, and this is the first time I've seen such a rapid rise in water," she stated.

The flooding has also impacted local agriculture, with many vegetable gardens submerged and mud covering the plant stems. The community, situated next to the dredging project, is now left to assess the damage and begin the long process of recovery.
