Vietnam's telecommunications companies are preparing to shut down the 2G network nationwide, effective from midnight on September 16, 2026. This decision comes after over 30 years of 2G service in the country, which was first launched in 1993. The move is part of a broader strategy to phase out outdated technology and allocate resources for the development of 4G and 5G networks.

2G technology, which stands for second-generation mobile telecommunications, has been deemed obsolete by many countries due to its vulnerabilities and inability to support modern digital services. The discontinuation of 2G is expected to free up bandwidth that can be repurposed for more advanced networks, thus improving internet speeds and connectivity across Vietnam.

Starting in mid-October 2024, the 2G network will no longer be available for devices that only support GSM (2G only), with exceptions for specific areas such as the Spratly and Paracel Islands. However, a two-year transition period will allow users with older 3G and 4G devices that do not support Voice over LTE (VoLTE) to upgrade their equipment or services.

VoLTE technology enables high-quality voice calls over 4G networks, providing clearer audio and reducing interruptions. As the 2G network is phased out, users will need to ensure their devices support VoLTE to maintain their calling capabilities.

A representative from Vinaphone emphasized that the shutdown of 2G is more than just replacing old technology; it is a significant step towards a modern digital infrastructure that allows all citizens to access online services, cashless payments, remote healthcare, and education. This transition aims to enhance the competitiveness of Vietnam's economy and support future technological advancements.

Users should be aware that the shutdown of 2G may affect not only those with 2G-only devices but also smartphone users who rely on 2G for voice calls. While many smartphones can connect to 4G for internet access, they may automatically switch to 2G for voice calls. If 2G is no longer available, these users must make calls directly over 4G using VoLTE.

To check if a device supports VoLTE, users can navigate to Settings > Mobile > SIM > Voice & Data and look for options related to VoLTE. For those with older SIM cards that may not support 4G, it is advisable to contact customer service or visit a nearby outlet for a free SIM upgrade while retaining their phone number.
