An inquest has commenced into the death of Phillip Ormerod, a great-grandfather from Cwmbran, South Wales, who passed away in hospital on August 12 after an alleged assault at a local pub. Mr. Ormerod, who was 102 years old and had dementia, reportedly suffered a fractured hip during the incident at the Crow’s Nest pub on August 1.

According to the Gwent Coroner’s Court, Mr. Ormerod was at the pub to enjoy a drink when he went on stage to voice his concerns about the volume of the music. It was during this time that he allegedly sustained a fall, which the coroner indicated may have been the result of being pushed.

After the fall, Mr. Ormerod was taken to the hospital where he received treatment for his injuries. However, his condition worsened, leading to his death just over a week later. The coroner, Caroline Saunders, noted that a provisional date for a further inquest into Mr. Ormerod’s death has been set for May next year, pending the conclusion of ongoing criminal investigations.

Gwent Police have confirmed that a 56-year-old man from Llanelli was arrested on suspicion of section 20 assault related to the incident and is currently on bail. Robert Ormerod, Phillip’s son, expressed his desire for justice, describing his father as a well-liked individual who enjoyed socializing at the pub. He remarked on the distressing nature of his father's final days, stating, "It would’ve been nice if he’d gone quietly in his sleep. He was in hospital, suffering, for a week-and-a-half. It’s not nice."

Phillip Ormerod was born in 1923 and had a career as a design engineer. His family has been deeply affected by his passing, and they continue to seek answers regarding the circumstances of his death.
