22-Year-Old Sentenced to Death for Murdering Cousin

A young man, Do Dang Duong, aged 22, has been sentenced to death by the Hanoi People's Court for the murder of his cousin, Do Van T., in a shocking incident that took place on February 20. The court found Duong guilty of murder and illegal possession of a military weapon.

According to the court's indictment, the tragic event unfolded during a family visit at Duong's home in Yen Lang commune, Hanoi. Duong was with his father when two uncles and his cousin came over for a drink. Observing Duong's unusual behavior, one of the uncles, Mr. Ch., expressed concern, suspecting that Duong might be under the influence of drugs. He asked, "Is it mosquito bites that make you look so red?" However, Duong did not respond and continued to exhibit erratic behavior.

As the conversation progressed, Duong's cousin, who was holding his two-year-old child, suggested that they should buy a drug test kit to confirm the suspicion. This remark triggered Duong, who suddenly grabbed a knife and attacked his cousin, striking him on the head and arms.

Despite the cousin's attempts to escape while carrying his child, Duong pursued him and pushed him to the ground, continuing to strike him multiple times until he lost consciousness. Bystanders managed to subdue Duong and took the knife away from him before handing him over to the local police.

Tragically, Duong's cousin succumbed to his injuries while being transported to the hospital due to severe blood loss and significant brain damage. The two-year-old child sustained minor injuries to his leg, but the family declined to pursue further medical examination for the child.

During the trial, the victim's family requested leniency for Duong, but the court deemed his actions to be particularly grave, indicating that he posed no possibility for rehabilitation. Consequently, they imposed the maximum sentence of death.
