A series of coordinated arson attacks in Southern Thailand has left communities in shock, prompting concerns over security and economic stability in the region. According to Tawee Sodsong, the leader of the Prachachat Party, at least 500 individuals may have been mobilized to carry out these attacks over the past weekend, affecting nearly 100 locations across the southern provinces.

The attacks were reported on August 22, when armed assailants set fire to a 7-Eleven store in Bang Pu, Yaring district of Pattani, after ordering the customers inside to leave. Initial reports from the Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC) indicated that 51 locations were affected, but this number could rise to nearly 100 when including additional acts of arson and vandalism.

Tawee highlighted that the scale of the violence suggests a level of organization, aimed at causing damage to the economy and property, as well as undermining investor confidence in Southern Thailand. The attacks have primarily targeted government offices, convenience stores, vehicles, power poles, and railway infrastructure.

Authorities have confirmed that there were at least 78 incidents across four provinces: 40 in Narathiwat, 21 in Yala, 15 in Pattani, and 2 in Songkhla. In response to the attacks, the Thai government has increased security measures and is actively investigating the perpetrators.

In light of these events, Tawee urged the Thai government to reconsider its approach to the ongoing unrest in the southern border provinces. He emphasized the need for a strategy that goes beyond security measures, advocating for dialogue with local communities, including those with differing views, to find a more suitable management model for the region.

As of now, no group has claimed responsibility for the attacks, and the situation remains under close scrutiny by Thai authorities.
