In a significant escalation of hostilities, Russia has launched missile attacks on Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, following a series of drone strikes by Ukraine targeting e-commerce warehouses in Russia. The attacks occurred early on July 19, 2026, with explosions reported throughout the city.
According to reports from AFP journalists in Kyiv, the Ukrainian air force had issued a warning via Telegram about incoming ballistic missiles just before the explosions were heard. One explosion was so powerful that it set off car alarms in the city center, highlighting the intensity of the attack.
Initial reports indicate that at least one person has died as a result of the missile strikes, while Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed that seven individuals sustained injuries. The State Emergency Service of Ukraine reported that two people were injured in the attacks. The missile strikes caused fires and extensive damage to buildings across various districts of Kyiv, including an apartment building in the Solomianskyi district and a supermarket fire.
These attacks follow Ukraine's drone operations on July 18, which targeted and destroyed warehouses in the Moscow and Tambov regions of Russia, leading to the deaths of eight individuals and significant property damage. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that these warehouses were used to supply components for drone production and positioning equipment.
In a broader context, the conflict has seen a surge in drone activity, with reports indicating that over 370 drones were launched towards Moscow overnight. The mayor of Moscow, Sergei Sobyanin, noted that nearly 1,892 Ukrainian drones were intercepted between July 11 and July 18.
In response to the ongoing conflict, Greece has also stepped in to assist Ukraine by transferring a significant number of missiles for the Crotale NG air defense system, as well as RIM-7 Sea Sparrow missiles, bolstering Ukraine's defense capabilities amidst the ongoing hostilities.
