Israel Accused of Striking Lebanon Despite Ceasefire Agreement

Israel has been accused of conducting airstrikes in southern Lebanon, targeting more than 10 locations from midnight until this morning. The city of Nabatieh and its suburbs, which have been focal points of recent clashes, were among the areas hit. The new wave of attacks has resulted in the deaths of five individuals, including three in the town of Arab Salim, one in Deir Zahrani, and another at the entrance to Dweir, according to Lebanon's National News Agency (NNA).

This escalation follows a statement from a U.S. official on June 19, indicating that Israel and the armed group Hezbollah had agreed to a ceasefire, which was set to take effect around 4 PM that day. The ceasefire agreement was facilitated by Qatar, the U.S., and Iran. Israel's ambassador to the U.S. stated that Israel is committed to adhering to the ceasefire if Hezbollah respects it.

Prior to the ceasefire announcement, Lebanon's Ministry of Health reported that Israeli airstrikes and shelling in southern and eastern Lebanon had resulted in 47 deaths on June 19. This marked the most severe escalation since the U.S. and Iran announced on June 17 that they had signed a memorandum aimed at ending the conflict that has persisted for over three months. The agreement also included provisions for halting hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon.

On June 19, the Israeli military reported that four of its soldiers had been killed and that its forces had conducted over 150 attacks on Lebanon, killing dozens of Hezbollah fighters. U.S. officials, including President Donald Trump, expressed disappointment over Israel's military actions in Lebanon. However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated on June 19 that the Israeli military would remain in southern Lebanon "as long as necessary." Hezbollah had entered the Middle Eastern conflict in early March, launching attacks against Israel in response to the assassination of Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Israel retaliated with large-scale airstrikes and a ground offensive.
