Samsung Phone Explodes in Man's Pocket, Causing Severe Burns

A Samsung phone exploded in the pocket of a man named Majid while he was traveling from Ghaziabad to Dankaur in India, leading to severe burns on his hands and lower body. According to reports from Free Press Journal, the incident occurred unexpectedly as the phone, which was believed to be a Galaxy S26, began to heat up and then exploded. Majid had purchased the device about a month ago from the Grand Venice shopping mall and had not experienced any issues prior to the explosion.

After the explosion, debris from the phone scattered around, igniting his clothing. In a desperate attempt to remove the burning device from his pocket, Majid suffered severe burns on both hands and other parts of his lower body, necessitating emergency hospitalization.

Images of the damaged Samsung phone show significant destruction, particularly around the battery area, which was completely charred. The heat generated from the explosion caused part of the phone's rear glass to melt. Although Samsung has not confirmed the exact model due to the extent of the damage, images suggest it is likely the Galaxy S26.

Majid has filed a complaint with Samsung India regarding the incident. As of now, Samsung has not released an official statement about the explosion. Experts note that lithium-ion batteries can experience thermal runaway, a phenomenon that can lead to overheating and explosions due to internal short circuits, physical damage, or exposure to high temperatures.

This incident marks the fourth reported case of a Galaxy phone exploding this year. In January, a Galaxy S25 Plus exploded while charging, with investigations attributing the cause to external force. In May, a Galaxy S24 user in South Korea suffered skin blisters when the device exploded while browsing the web, and another Galaxy S25 FE user in Canada reported a fire while charging overnight with a third-party charger.

Despite these incidents, technology experts assert that smartphone battery explosions are relatively rare today, thanks to stringent safety standards implemented after the Galaxy Note 7 crisis. Samsung has previously stated its commitment to ensuring the quality and safety of its devices worldwide and works closely with customers to investigate individual incidents.
