Chi Dân and Andrea Aybar Among 227 Accused in Major Drug Case

In a high-profile drug trafficking case, singer Chi Dân, whose real name is Nguyễn Trung Hiếu, and model Andrea Aybar, also known as An Tây, are among 227 individuals being prosecuted. The trial commenced on August 17 at the Ho Chi Minh City People's Court and is set to run until September 12. The defendants face various charges, including illegal transportation and use of narcotics, as well as possession and concealment of illegal substances.

The case emerged following the discovery of over 8 kilograms of ecstasy, more than 3 kilograms of ketamine, and cocaine in the luggage of four flight attendants at Tan Son Nhat Airport on March 16, 2023. This led to an extensive investigation by the Ho Chi Minh City Police, who established a special task force to dismantle the drug trafficking network.

Among the key figures in the case, Hà Danh Nậm and Hoàng Sỹ Thắng are accused of leading the operation. Nậm, along with three other defendants, is currently evading arrest and is being tried in absentia. Chi Dân and his brother, Nguyễn Trung Tín, as well as Nguyễn Đỗ Trúc Phương, are charged with organizing the illegal use of narcotics. Andrea Aybar is accused of both organizing and possessing illegal drugs.

The investigation revealed that the drug trafficking network was highly organized, utilizing various methods to smuggle narcotics from Europe to Vietnam. Packages were disguised as everyday consumer goods and sent through international express delivery services. The police have identified a significant number of individuals involved in the supply chain, leading to over 2,700 suspects being charged in 477 related cases.

The trial is being conducted publicly, with around 120 lawyers representing the defendants. The proceedings are taking place both in-person and online, reflecting the serious nature of the charges and the extensive network involved in this drug trafficking operation.
