On August 5, 2026, leaders from Thai Nguyen and Phu Tho provinces announced the initiation of procedures for the Tam Dao Tunnel project, which will connect Thai Nguyen, Phu Tho, and Hanoi. This significant step is part of a broader effort to enhance connectivity between the eastern and western slopes of Tam Dao.

During the meeting, Vương Quốc Tuấn, Chairman of the Thai Nguyen People’s Committee, emphasized that the investment in the Tam Dao Tunnel is a realization of the commitment to cooperative development among localities. The project aims to meet the long-held aspirations of residents for a transportation route that has been envisioned through various phases of development. With the determination of both provinces, the necessary planning conditions have been largely met to bring this project to fruition.

Trần Duy Đông, Chairman of the Phu Tho People’s Committee, affirmed that this tunnel is not just a connection between two provinces but a regional project that will contribute to economic and social development, tourism enhancement, and strengthening national defense and security.

The proposed route will span approximately 19.65 kilometers, with a 2-kilometer tunnel through Tam Dao. The total investment is estimated at 5.8 trillion VND, implemented through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. The project is expected to create a new connectivity axis, expanding the tourism chain from Hanoi to Dai Lai, Tam Dao, Nui Coc Lake, ATK Dinh Hoa, Tan Trao, and Ba Be Lake, thus driving socio-economic development for the entire region.

This initiative marks a pivotal moment in enhancing infrastructure and connectivity in northern Vietnam, fostering growth and accessibility for local communities.
