Vietnam's Budget Revenue from Trade Surges Nearly 19% in 7 Months

As of August 5, 2026, the General Department of Customs reported that the state budget revenue from export and import activities in Vietnam reached 309.994 trillion VND in the first seven months of the year. This amount is equivalent to 68.7% of the target set for the year, which is 451 trillion VND, and 60% of the ambitious goal of 516.5 trillion VND. Notably, this revenue reflects an impressive increase of 18.7% compared to the same period in 2025.

The total import-export turnover of the country for the same period reached 659.58 billion USD, marking a 28.1% increase year-on-year. Specifically, the export turnover was 319.53 billion USD, up 21.7%, while the import turnover reached 340.05 billion USD, which is a 34.8% increase from the previous year.

In July alone, Vietnam recorded a trade deficit of 3.59 billion USD, bringing the total trade deficit for the first seven months of 2026 to 20.52 billion USD. The Customs Department also highlighted a decline in smuggling and trade fraud cases, with 492 fewer incidents reported compared to the previous month. However, there was an increase in cases compared to July 2025, particularly regarding the smuggling of gold across borders.

In total, the Customs Department has detected and handled 13,413 violations during the first seven months, with an estimated value of the infringing goods reaching 11.98 trillion VND. The agency has initiated legal proceedings in 9 cases and referred 87 cases for prosecution, resulting in a total of 725.3 billion VND collected from administrative fines.

Looking ahead, Nguyen Van Tho, the Director of the Customs Department, urged the entire sector to continue implementing measures to facilitate trade and streamline administrative procedures. The focus will be on building a smart and modern customs system, leveraging digital data and advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence and big data analysis.

Moreover, the Customs Department aims to enhance its capabilities in managing imports and exports, ensuring compliance with legal regulations, and combating tax evasion and trade fraud effectively.
