The iPhone 18 Pro Max is making headlines as rumors circulate about its pricing, which is expected to see a significant increase compared to previous models. According to PhoneArena, sourced from a Weibo account named Smart Pikachu, the new iPhone could launch with a starting price of approximately 11,000 yuan in China, translating to around $1,625 USD. This marks a notable jump from the $1,199 price tag of the iPhone 17 Pro Max when it was released last year.

If this price increase is applied across various markets, it would represent the largest price hike for the Pro Max line in several years. Analysts suggest that Apple may be considering this adjustment not only to boost profits but also to reflect the rising production costs of high-end components.

One of the primary contributors to these rising costs is the new A20 Pro chip, which is expected to be manufactured by TSMC using advanced 2nm technology. This process is more sophisticated than the current 3nm technology used in existing iPhone models. Reports indicate that the cost of a 2nm wafer could reach around $30,000, representing a 50-66% increase over the 3nm wafer costs. Consequently, the production cost for the first 2nm chips is projected to rise by approximately 20% compared to previous generations.

In addition to the chip costs, memory prices are also exerting upward pressure on smartphone manufacturing costs. Recent statistics show that contract prices for DRAM have surged by 90-95% in Q1 and are expected to rise another 58-63% in Q2. Meanwhile, the market price for NAND memory has skyrocketed by up to 300% compared to previous levels. This increase in memory prices has caused the component's share of total smartphone production costs to rise to about 20%, up from the previous 10-15% range.

While Apple has not officially confirmed any pricing details for the iPhone 18 series, experts believe that if component costs continue to climb, a price adjustment will be unavoidable.
