Experts Warn Against Mass Killing of Red-Tailed Green Snakes

The red-tailed green snake, scientifically known as Trimeresurus albolabris, is notorious for its strong venom that can cause severe blood clotting disorders in humans. Recently, a surge of videos showing people hunting these snakes has raised concerns about public safety and ecological impact. Experts warn that indiscriminate killing is not a viable solution and could lead to ecological imbalance.

This snake, commonly found in southern provinces and the Central Highlands of Vietnam, is easily recognizable by its bright green body and red, brown, or orange tail. It primarily inhabits dense vegetation, making it adept at camouflage. The snakes are nocturnal and usually only attack when threatened or stepped on. A bite can result in immediate swelling, pain, and potential bleeding, with symptoms worsening if not treated promptly.

Research from Bạch Mai Hospital highlights the complexity of the snake's venom, which contains over 20 different toxic components. These toxins can disrupt almost every aspect of the body's clotting process, leading to severe complications such as prolonged bleeding, heart damage, and acute kidney failure if not treated in time. The Ministry of Health has issued guidelines recommending the use of antivenom for those showing abnormal bleeding or clotting disorders.

Mr. Lê Văn Đua, Deputy Director of the Đồng Tâm Snake Farm, notes that the recent trend of hunting these snakes is largely driven by social media rather than scientific advice. He emphasizes that while the red-tailed green snake can be dangerous, it plays a crucial role in the ecosystem, controlling populations of rodents and other small animals. The farm continues to raise these snakes for research and educational purposes, advocating for a scientific approach to understanding their role in nature rather than succumbing to fear.

Experts recommend that instead of exterminating these snakes, communities should focus on preventive measures, such as clearing dense vegetation around homes and being cautious in areas where snakes may reside. Additionally, snake venom has significant medical research value, contributing to the development of antivenoms and various treatments. Thus, a balanced approach that prioritizes safety and ecological health is essential.
