A dramatic incident unfolded in Yuan Yang County, Honghe Prefecture, Yunnan Province, China, when a woman attempted to save her husband from a snake bite. The husband was bitten by a cobra while weeding in a field, leading to immediate swelling and symptoms of dizziness and weakness.
In a panic, the wife recalled scenes from television dramas where characters suck out snake venom to save victims. Believing this was the correct course of action, she used her mouth to try to extract the venom from her husband's wound. Shortly after he was taken to the hospital, the wife began to experience numbness in her lips and tongue, which quickly spread to her face and limbs.
The following day, she felt severe body aches and fatigue, prompting her family to take her to the People's Hospital No. 3 of Honghe. Medical examinations revealed that the husband had been poisoned by the cobra's venom, while the wife also suffered from toxicity due to the venom entering her bloodstream through her mouth's mucous membranes.
Doctors warned that without prompt treatment, both could face severe complications such as respiratory failure or arrhythmias, which could be life-threatening. Upon confirming the snakebite case, the medical team administered antivenom to both patients, treated the wounds, and provided supportive care while closely monitoring their vital signs.
After several days of treatment, the couple's conditions stabilized, and their symptoms of numbness significantly decreased, leading to their eventual discharge from the hospital. This incident serves as a crucial reminder from medical professionals: individuals should never attempt to suck out snake venom, cut the wound, apply ice, or self-administer medication when bitten by a venomous snake. Such actions do not eliminate the venom and can increase the risk of infection or further poisoning if there are cuts or wounds in the mouth.
In case of a snakebite, victims are advised to remain calm, limit movement to slow the spread of venom, and seek immediate medical attention for antivenom treatment as soon as possible.
