Frightening Sight: Snakes Escape Flooded Farm in China

Residents of Hoang Chau in Guangxi, China, are experiencing heightened anxiety after a video surfaced showing numerous snakes swimming in floodwaters, resembling the mythical Loch Ness Monster. This unsettling sight follows the escape of over 900 snakes from a breeding farm, which was compromised by severe flooding caused by Typhoon Maysak.

On July 10, it was reported that the floodwaters had breached the snake farm, leading to the escape of various species, including highly venomous cobras and non-venomous water snakes. The local community is understandably alarmed by the presence of these snakes in the floodwaters, as many fear for their safety.

The flooding was triggered by prolonged heavy rainfall that damaged a nearby reservoir, causing water to surge into residential areas and wash away the snake farm. Footage circulating on social media depicted snakes raising their heads above the water, which has stirred panic among locals, with some comparing the scene to that of a mythical creature.

The Hoang Chau Emergency Management Agency has confirmed that rescue teams have been deployed to locate the escaped snakes and assist residents affected by the floods. Authorities have also reported that approximately 2,000 to 3,000 snakes, primarily water snakes, have been captured in the inundated areas over the past two days.

In response to the situation, local health facilities have increased their supply of snake antivenom, and residents are advised to avoid flooded areas and refrain from attempting to catch any snakes they might encounter. Reports indicate that at least one person has been bitten by a snake and is currently receiving medical treatment.

The flooding has resulted in significant casualties, with at least 39 people confirmed dead due to the disaster, including 26 fatalities in Hoang Chau alone from the collapse of a dam. Additionally, nine individuals remain missing across Guangxi. The floods have severely disrupted daily life, isolating many communities and impacting thousands of students and teachers who were trapped in schools.

Moreover, a zoo in Quyi Port reported that over 100 animals, including zebras and various tropical birds, have gone missing following the flood. In Tan Duong County, animal rescue efforts are underway to save around 200 cats and several dogs stranded in the flooded areas.
