Mykhailo Drapatyi has officially taken over as the new Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, a position previously held by Oleksandr Syrsky. This appointment was announced by President Volodymyr Zelensky on July 21, following a wave of protests in Kyiv and other cities, where demonstrators called for Syrsky's dismissal and the reinstatement of former Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov.

In a significant political maneuver, President Zelensky had dismissed Fedorov due to disagreements over military strategy with Syrsky. The decision to appoint Drapatyi is viewed as an attempt to quell public dissent, particularly as the new commander expressed support for Fedorov, who is well-regarded among the military and the public.

At 43 years old, Drapatyi represents a new generation of Ukrainian military leaders, having been forged in the ongoing conflict that began in 2014. He has spent most of his military career in combat roles, including as the head of the Joint Forces Command, which oversees daily operations across various branches of the military.

According to reports, Drapatyi is known for his discipline and effectiveness in combat, often deployed to stabilize critical areas on the front lines. Although he rarely appears in public, he has earned widespread respect both within the military and among civilians due to his past achievements.

After graduating from the Kharkov Tank Command School in 2004, Drapatyi joined the 72nd Independent Mechanized Brigade, quickly rising through the ranks. He gained notoriety in May 2014 when he led an armored column into Mariupol to rescue police officers and territorial defense officials surrounded by pro-Russian insurgents. His bold actions during this time were pivotal, showcasing decisive leadership at a time when many military officers hesitated to take independent action.

In the following years, Drapatyi continued to ascend through various command positions, leading brigades in combat in the Donbass region. By February 2022, he was serving as the deputy commander of the Joint Forces Command when Russia launched its special military operation. In 2024, he played a crucial role in halting Russian advances toward Kryvyi Rih, President Zelensky's hometown, and helped repel enemy forces from several areas in Kherson province.

Despite his successes, Drapatyi resigned as commander of the Ukrainian Ground Forces in June 2025, following heavy casualties in a Russian attack on a training ground. He took personal responsibility for the incident, citing obstacles in his efforts to reform the army due to internal bureaucratic protections among officials.

After his resignation, he was appointed to lead the Joint Forces Command, where he proposed reforms in recruitment, training, and the integration of technology into the military. On July 16, Drapatyi publicly supported former Defense Minister Fedorov, emphasizing the need for a partner in the Ministry of Defense who could address soldiers' needs while demanding accountability.

Former Defense Minister Fedorov praised Drapatyi's appointment as a "breath of fresh air and a source of hope," indicating a shift that could no longer be ignored. The Ukrainian news outlet Babel described him as one of the country’s best battlefield commanders, although it noted that his new role would primarily focus on restructuring rather than direct combat leadership.

President Zelensky stated that he and Drapatyi agreed to continue launching long-range drone strikes against targets in Russia, committing to precise operations. The president also highlighted the urgent need to mobilize troops as fewer Ukrainians are willing to volunteer amid the prolonged conflict.
