Former Ukrainian Commander Criticizes Western Support in Conflict

Valerii Zaluzhnyi, the former commander of Ukraine's armed forces, has recently expressed his frustration with Western perspectives on the ongoing conflict with Russia. In an article published in The Daily Telegraph, he pointed out that many analysts in the West are mistakenly concluding that Russia has already lost the war, a notion he describes as a "dangerous misreading" of the current situation.

Zaluzhnyi argues that modern warfare has evolved beyond traditional tactics, with advancements in drone technology, precision strikes, and all-weather reconnaissance fundamentally altering the battlefield dynamics. This evolution makes it increasingly difficult for either side to achieve decisive breakthroughs, transforming the conflict into a prolonged war of attrition. He noted that any tactical gain comes at a high cost, with territorial advances measured in mere meters rather than kilometers.

Despite Ukraine's successful strikes against Russian logistics and critical infrastructure, Zaluzhnyi warns that such operations are costly and technically demanding. He emphasizes that Russia also possesses the capability for retaliatory strikes of equal or greater intensity, leading to a stalemate where neither side can secure a decisive strategic victory.

According to Zaluzhnyi, the battlefield is nearing a state of equilibrium, with neither Russia able to fully conquer Ukraine nor Ukraine capable of reclaiming all lost territory through military force. He believes that while Russia has not achieved its initial political objectives, this does not equate to a total failure, as Russian forces continue to operate and control significant areas of Ukraine.

On the other hand, Zaluzhnyi acknowledges that Ukraine cannot claim complete victory either. Although Ukraine has thwarted Russia's initial strategic goals and inflicted substantial economic and military losses on Moscow, it remains heavily reliant on Western financial aid, weaponry, and technical support. Domestic pressures within Ukraine are also mounting, complicating the situation further.

He warns that Russia's current strategy is focused on a war of attrition, aiming to exhaust Ukraine economically, militarily, and psychologically. Zaluzhnyi highlights that Russia still holds advantages in manpower and key industrial sectors, including missile production, which cannot be fully offset by Ukraine's air defense systems alone.

Ultimately, he stresses that the decisive factor influencing the war's outcome will be the West's ability to maintain support for Ukraine. Political shifts in the United States and ongoing divisions within Europe raise questions about the sustainability of current levels of assistance.
