The Vietnamese government has announced plans to take strict action against media outlets that have published articles praising the book 'Story with Thanh: New Accounts of Light' by Nguyễn Thành Nam. The book has been criticized for containing serious factual inaccuracies, leading to its withdrawal from circulation.
According to Lưu Đình Phúc, the Director of the Department of Journalism and Publishing, over 20 media agencies published articles based on a press release that lauded the book. However, the book was later found to contain significant errors regarding historical figures and events, particularly in its portrayal of President Hồ Chí Minh and other prominent leaders.
In a recent meeting, Phúc emphasized the importance of journalistic integrity, stating that quick reporting without thorough verification can lead to severe consequences. He indicated that the Department of Journalism plans to impose administrative penalties on the involved media outlets, which could include fines and suspensions.
The book was published by the Hội Nhà Văn (Writers' Association Publishing House) but was quickly subjected to scrutiny. On June 15, the publishing house was fined 100 million VND and faced a two-month operational suspension for its role in the publication of the book. This sanction aims to ensure that the publishing house reviews and corrects its practices.
On July 7, the Hanoi police announced that they had initiated legal proceedings against Nguyễn Thành Nam, who is accused of creating and distributing materials that undermine the socialist state of Vietnam. The charges against him include the dissemination of false information that distorts the history of the country and disrespects its leaders.
Nam has publicly acknowledged the inaccuracies in his book and expressed remorse for the impact it has had on public perception and the reputation of the government. He stated, "I recognize the seriousness of my mistakes and sincerely apologize." This incident highlights the ongoing tensions in Vietnam regarding freedom of expression and the responsibilities of authors and media organizations.
