Vietnam Requests Universities to Report on Nguyễn Thành Nam's Teaching Engagements

Vietnam's Ministry of Education and Training has issued a request for universities to report on the invitation of Nguyễn Thành Nam for guest lectures, seminars, and other academic activities. This directive, outlined in document number 3936/BGDĐT-GDĐH, emphasizes the need for educational institutions to provide detailed information regarding any engagement of Nguyễn Thành Nam in their academic programs.

The ministry's request aims to ensure that the activities involving Nguyễn Thành Nam, who is a prominent figure in the education sector and former General Director of FPT Corporation, are in compliance with national education regulations and standards. Institutions are required to submit their reports by June 28, 2026, detailing the nature of the engagements, including the time, organizing unit, format, content discussed, and participant details.

This request comes in the wake of significant public scrutiny regarding Nguyễn Thành Nam's recent book, "Stories with Thanh – A New Narrative on Light," published by the Writers' Association Publishing House in April 2026. The book has faced backlash for allegedly containing inaccuracies about historical figures and events, as well as inappropriate language when referencing key leaders, including Ho Chi Minh.

In response to the controversy, the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism has instructed the Publishing Department to review the publication in accordance with legal standards. The department has already retracted the book due to serious factual inaccuracies and non-compliance with publishing laws. The Writers' Association Publishing House has been fined and suspended for two months, and they are required to destroy all copies of the retracted book and return the profits gained from its sale.

In their explanation, the publishing house acknowledged shortcomings in manuscript organization, editing, and content accuracy, and they have proposed corrective measures to address these issues. The case has highlighted the importance of adherence to educational and publishing standards in Vietnam.
