Tuyen Quang Proposes Retake of Abnormal Math Exam Scores

The education department in Tuyen Quang has suggested that students retake the Math exam following the revelation of an unusual number of perfect scores. This decision comes after a press conference held on July 9, 2026, where officials discussed the high number of students achieving scores of 10 in the Math subject at Tuyen Quang Specialized High School.

According to Hoang Minh Canh, Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training, the graduation exam involved over 17,000 students from 92 schools, with 62 exam centers and more than 3,600 officials involved in the process. The department received reports of irregularities, particularly concerning the 147 students who scored 10 out of 10 in Math across 13 out of 15 exam rooms, which raised suspicions of misconduct.

In response to these concerns, the education department has initiated a thorough review of all exam scores, focusing on students who achieved unusually high results compared to their academic records. While the average scores in other subjects were consistent with students' previous performances, the Math scores stood out as anomalous.

During the press conference, officials revealed that the department had met with parents and students from the specialized school, who expressed their support for a retake of the Math exam to ensure fairness and transparency. The department has proposed this plan to the Ministry of Education and Training, which includes installing non-networked cameras in exam rooms to monitor the retake process.

In addition, the police have opened a criminal investigation into the matter, charging four individuals with abusing their positions during the examination process. Among those charged is Nguyen Ha Duy, a Math teacher at the specialized school, who allegedly provided assistance to students during the exam. The investigation is ongoing, and the authorities are committed to addressing any violations of regulations.

Nguyen Manh Tuan, Deputy Chairman of the Tuyen Quang Provincial People's Committee, emphasized the need for a transparent and lawful approach to resolving this issue. He stated that the province is working closely with the Ministry to ensure that the rights of all students, especially those uninvolved in the incident, are protected. Tuan also mentioned that this situation serves as a critical lesson for future examinations, highlighting the importance of enhancing oversight and ethical standards among those involved in the examination process.

The unusual Math scores from Tuyen Quang have drawn national attention since the Ministry of Education and Training released the graduation exam results on July 1. Out of 328 students in a specific registration range, over 290 scored 9 or higher in Math, with more than 140 achieving a perfect score. The average score for this group was reported to be 9.58, the highest in the country. Deputy Prime Minister Le Tien Chau has called for a comprehensive resolution to the situation by July 10, ensuring that it aligns with legal and educational principles.
