Luxury Electric Vehicles Surge into Vietnam's Market

The luxury electric vehicle (EV) market in Vietnam is witnessing a remarkable surge, with numerous high-end models either recently launched or set to debut soon. This influx indicates a strong trend towards electrification across nearly all segments of the automotive market. Vietnamese consumers now have the option to purchase fully electric cars in various categories, ranging from compact models like the VF 2 and Bestune Xiaoma to urban electric SUVs, MPVs, and luxury electric vehicles.

In the past two years, luxury and super-luxury car brands have actively introduced several fully electric models, providing customers with more choices in the premium segment. Following the launch of the EC40 electric SUV at the end of 2024, Volvo has confirmed that its electric sedan ES90 and SUV EX90 will officially debut in Vietnam in the fourth quarter of 2026. While the pricing has not yet been confirmed, these models will feature an 800 V electric architecture that supports fast DC charging, allowing for a 10-80% battery recharge in approximately 22 minutes.

Mercedes-Benz is also set to introduce the fully electric CLA sedan early next year, with an expected price below 1.7 billion VND. This addition will enhance the brand's electric product lineup in Vietnam, which already includes models such as the EQB, EQE SUV, EQS SUV, EQS Sedan, Maybach EQS SUV, and G 580 EQ.

Recently, Audi introduced its first fully electric S model, the S6 Sportback e-tron, in Vietnam, priced starting at nearly 4.2 billion VND. Previously, Audi's e-tron line welcomed the electric SUV Q6 e-tron in July 2025, which shares its platform with the Porsche Cayenne EV. In April, Porsche Vietnam announced pre-orders for the fully electric Cayenne EV, with prices ranging from 4.72 to 6.32 billion VND, excluding personalization options through the Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur program.

Italian luxury brand Maserati introduced its first fully electric models, the Grecale Folgore and GranCabrio Folgore, priced at 5.495 billion VND and 13.314 billion VND, respectively. The GranCabrio Folgore is noted as the first fully electric convertible in the global luxury segment. VinFast has recently announced its super-luxury brand Lạc Hồng, featuring models such as the 900 LX, 900S, and 800S, with the 900 LX starting at around 5 billion VND, while the armored version could reach approximately 40 billion VND.

Lotus has also entered the Vietnamese market with three electric models, including the Lotus Eletre and Lotus Emeya, priced between 4.448 and 7.188 billion VND. The Zeekr brand is expected to join the market soon, with its standout model being the large electric MPV Zeekr 009, projected to be priced over 4 billion VND.

The rapid growth of the luxury electric vehicle market is indicative of a broader acceptance of electric cars, which were once perceived as exclusive to the high-end segment. This shift aligns with the upcoming regulations aimed at reducing emissions in major Vietnamese cities, making luxury electric vehicles a viable option for affluent customers who often reside in or travel to low-emission zones.

Despite the high prices, luxury electric vehicles effectively address personal branding concerns for customers while complying with road traffic emission reduction regulations. However, one of the significant challenges facing electric vehicles, both in the mainstream and luxury segments, is the charging infrastructure. While many high-end customers can install charging stations at home, the availability of charging options during travel and at public parking facilities remains a crucial factor affecting purchase decisions.

Brands like Volvo, Lotus, and Zeekr are addressing these concerns with the introduction of charging stations, while other manufacturers like Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Maserati are providing solutions to alleviate customer worries regarding charging and the operational range of electric vehicles. Overall, while luxury electric vehicles remain a niche segment with limited sales potential to impact the broader Vietnamese electric vehicle market significantly, the increasing presence of luxury electric models signals a growing interest from manufacturers in Vietnam's electric vehicle landscape.
