China has officially expelled General Trương Hựu Hiệp and General Lưu Chấn Lập from the Central Military Commission, as reported by the state news agency Xinhua. Both generals faced investigations due to allegations of serious violations of discipline, a term often associated with corruption in the Chinese military context.

General Trương Hựu Hiệp, who previously served as the Vice Chairman of the Central Military Commission, has had a long military career since enlisting in 1968. He held significant leadership positions in the Beijing and Shenyang military districts before becoming a member of the Central Military Commission and overseeing logistics and military equipment. In 2018, he was appointed to the Politburo, marking a significant rise in his political influence.

General Lưu Chấn Lập, originally from Hebei, also holds the rank of senior general. He became a member of the Central Military Commission in 2022 and was appointed Chief of Staff of the Joint Staff Department in 2023. His previous roles included commanding two army groups and serving as the Chief of Staff for the armed police.

The Joint Staff Department of the Central Military Commission, established on January 11, 2016, is the highest operational command authority of the Chinese military, responsible for strategic planning, joint training, and combat readiness. The expulsion of these high-ranking officials is part of President Xi Jinping's ongoing anti-corruption campaign, which has been a hallmark of his administration.

In January, the Chinese Ministry of Defense announced that both generals were under investigation for serious violations of discipline and law, indicating potential corruption. The PLA Daily, the official newspaper of the People's Liberation Army, published an editorial in February stating that the investigations into Trương Hựu Hiệp and Lưu Chấn Lập aim to eliminate weaknesses and invigorate military development. The editorial emphasized that resolutely investigating and punishing corrupt officials like Trương and Lưu would remove obstacles hindering progress in military affairs.
