Transport Ministry weighs proposal for second int’l airport in Hanoi
HCMC – The Ministry of Transport has assigned its relevant agencies to look into a recent proposal by Hanoi City to make its second airport an international one.

The Ministry of Transport has written to the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) and the Transport Engineering Design Incorporated (TEDI) asking them to consider the proposal to include its second airport in the national airport system development master plan for 2021-2030, with a vision toward 2050.

Earlier, the Ministry of Transport received Official Letter No. 1382 from the Hanoi City People’s Committee proposing to have one more international airport rather than a domestic one.

CAAV and TEDI have been told to study the proposal and report to the ministry prior to May 27.

According to the Hanoi authorities, the capital city area is expected to have 21-23 million people by 2050 and a total land area of 24,314 square kilometers, similar to the HCMC area.

The national airport system development master plan submitted by the Ministry of Transport to the prime minister for consideration also includes two international airports for the HCMC area, namely the Tan Son Nhat and Long Thanh international airports.

The Hanoi authorities, therefore, indicated that it was necessary for the city to have two international airports to meet its increasing air travel demand similar to that of HCMC.
