Northern Vietnam faces the risk of 4900 megawatts of power shortage in this 2023 dry season

Severe shortage in power in Northern Vietnam

The northern and central regions in Vietnam have entered a hot season since April. Still, Vnexpress recorded, according to Vietnam Electric Power Company (EVN), electricity production has increased. According to data from the group, the average weekly electricity generation in mid-April (April 16-21) was 823 million kilowatt hours per day, an increase of nearly 5% compared to the power system supply and operation plan approved by the Ministry of Industry and Trade for this year.
EVN stated that starting from April 17, the National Power System Control Center must mobilize oil units, with 2498 megawatts of oil mobilized for operation on April 21.

From May to July, when the northern region enters the peak period of high temperatures, the consumption capacity of the region is expected to increase by 15% year-on-year. According to EVN's prediction, if extreme situations occur, the water level of hydropower stations in the area will sharply decrease. North Vietnam will face a risk of 1600 to 4900 megawatts of electricity shortage in May and June.

Electricity prices have increased by 3% since May 4, 2023

After four years of unchanged operation, electricity per kilowatt hour will increase by 3% to 1920.37 Vietnamese dongs (excluding value-added tax).
According to the recent decision signed by the General Manager of EVN, the average electricity price has increased from 1864.44 Vietnamese dongs to 1920.37 Vietnamese dong/kWh (excluding value-added tax), equivalent to a 3% increase. The government and the Ministry of Industry approved this decision.
Therefore, after holding for four years, the average retail electricity price is adjusted to increase.
Electricity is a significant proportion of the Consumer Price Index (CPI). The Ministry of Industry and Trade leaders have confirmed in their past sharing that the proposed price increase plan has been carefully calculated and the roadmap is correct.

How will the electricity price for the commercial sector rise?

The electricity sales prices in the manufacturing industry are divided by voltage level and low time frame (peak and regular). Therefore, the highest electricity price during peak hours is 3171 Vietnamese dong, regular hours are 1738 Vietnamese dong, and the low point is 1133 Vietnamese dong per kilowatt hour.
The new electricity price for the administrative department is 1690-940 Vietnamese dong per kilowatt hour, depending on the time frame and voltage level. The retail prices of the commercial sector vary significantly between peak and low periods, with 4724 Vietnamese dongs and 1402 Vietnamese dong/kWh, respectively. This price does not include value-added tax.
After the price change, over 1.82 million customers using electricity for production are estimated to pay an additional 307000 Vietnamese dong monthly. Customers using commercial electricity pay an extra 141000 Vietnamese dong per month; My career is approximately $40000 monthly.

Regarding the impact of electricity price increases on the Consumer Price Index (CPI), according to the National Bureau of Statistics calculations, if electricity prices increase by 5%, the CPI will increase by approximately 0.17%. Therefore, as prices rise by 3%, EVN stated that "the impact on CPI is minimal."
