These days, people in Pieng Mon village, Mai Son commune, and Tuong Duong district invite each other to the mountain to pick forest bitter melon.

“Forest bitter gourd in Pieng Mon village, formerly a wild fruit that people often take home to use in their daily meals. However, in the past two years, I introduced it on social networking sites, so many people know and order this fruit, after picking it, it can be sliced ​​thin, sun-dried or dried, cooked in a very healthy drink, especially for people with diabetes, blood fat…”, Ms. Bui Thi Lan shared.

There are many people ordering, forest products to bring income, thereby creating jobs and seasonal jobs for villagers.  

Taking advantage of the summer break, Kha Thi Ngan, an 8th grader, went to the mountains to pick bitter melon from the forest to earn more money to buy books.

“The forest bitter gourd season lasts from May to August. This year’s forest bitter melon crop has an estimated yield of over 3.5 tons. In addition to the fruit, people also preliminarily process the stems and leaves of this plant and dry it to dry it. Currently, the management board of Pieng Mon village has included in the convention on caring, protecting, harvesting and expanding the area of ​​this tree,” added Ms. Bui Thi Lan.

Ms. Kha Thi Hoa, head of Pieng Mon village, went to the mountain to pick bitter melon from the forest to earn extra income.

Ms. Kha Thi Loa, Pieng Mon village, Mai Son commune, said that from the beginning of the season until now, the income from bitter melon is about over 10 million VND. There are households earning up to 13-15 million VND such as Vi Thi Dung and Vi Thi Van in Pieng Mon village.

Currently, Pieng Mon village has about 25/49 households who regularly go to the forest to pick bitter melon. Thanks to the gifts of nature, the people of Pieng Mon in recent years have been well off, have food to eat, and their lives have improved markedly.

The women of Pieng Mon village, Mai Son commune crossed the mountains for hours to find the forest areas where bitter melon trees grow wild to pick.
