 The ‘super’ project of the largest irrigation culvert in Vietnam with an investment of more than 3,300 billion VND has just finished installing the last ‘giant’ valve door weighing 203 tons. About 2 weeks from now, this project will officially operate.

At noon on June 17, at Cai Lon irrigation sluice project with the largest scale in Vietnam, the Management Board of Irrigation Construction and Investment 10 (Board 10), under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, together with Lilama 10 Joint Stock Company and Related units have installed the last of 11 “giant” valves at Cai Lon sluice project.

The above work is the main component of the “super” project of Cai Lon – Cai Be Irrigation System, phase 1 (in the area of ​​2 districts of An Bien and Chau Thanh, Kien Giang). The project has a total investment capital of more than VND 3,300 billion, invested by Board 10. Before that, in mid-March 2021, the above work had installed the first valve gate.

According to the investor, the newly installed valve gate has an aperture of 40 m x 9 m, weighing 203 tons. A total of Cai Lon sluice gates include 11 valve gates; in which there are 8 valve gates with an aperture of 4 0m x 9 m, weighing 203 tons; 2 valves with aperture 40 m x 7.5 m, weighing 188 tons; 1 gate valve 40m x 6.0 m, weighs 155 tons.

Because of the huge size of the valve gates, the installation stage is very difficult and complicated when performing in the middle of the river, under the great pressure of the flow and the wind blowing… Particularly for fixing equipment, lifting gate cranes, moving Moving the door to the culvert took 2-3 days to complete before it could be officially installed.

Mr. Le Hong Linh, Director of Board 10 (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) said that the construction work in the context of the complicated Covid-19 epidemic faced many difficulties. However, thanks to the fact that workers have to limit their travel, the construction work is more concentrated and the construction progress is significantly shortened.

“Normally a similar project takes at least 36 months, but because of the urgent need to prevent drought and salinity, we tried to reduce it to 24 months. Especially, thanks to the focus on construction in the midst of the Covid- 19 epidemic, the progress continues to be accelerated and so far it can be said that it is earlier than a dry season (about 4 months)”, Mr. Linh said.

According to Mr. Linh, one difficulty is that from the beginning of 2021 to now, the price of raw materials has increased greatly, but in this work the contractors have been very proactive, having an influence but not affecting the progress.

Unprecedented ‘super’ irrigation works

As  Thanh Nien informed, the Cai Lon – Cai Be Irrigation System project phase 1 was started in October 2019 with a total investment of more than 3,309 billion VND. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2021. This is the largest irrigation project in Vietnam in terms of scale and aperture; was built on the Cai Lon River, the project was designed, constructed and managed by  Vietnamese people .

Previously, in early February, a component, Cai Be sluice, was put into operation earlier than expected to control salinity in the 2020-2021 dry season for about 20,000 hectares of productive land in Kien Giang and Hau Giang provinces. Currently, all items in Cai Be culvert have been basically completed.



Workers must limit travel to prevent the epidemic, the construction work is more concentrated and the construction progress is significantly shortened.

Particularly for Cai Lon sluice gate, after installing 11 valves, the project is considered to have completed more than 90% of the volume. According to Mr. Le Hong Linh, in the next 2 weeks, Cai Lon sluice will be able to open and close as required for production.

“Next is how to operate effectively, without too much impact on the environment, to operate most effectively for farmers. However, the sluice will really come into play in the dry season, which is from December to May of next year,” said Mr. Linh.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, once completed, the Cai Lon – Cai Be Irrigation System project will help control water sources and create stable and sustainable production conditions for production models for the benefit area. with a natural area of ​​384,120 ha, of which land for agricultural and fishery production is 346,241 ha.

Besides, controlling water sources (salt, brackish, fresh), creating stable and sustainable production conditions for production models according to ecosystems (sweet, salty – brackish, fresh – brackish alternately). . In addition, the West Sea dyke is also combined to form a cluster of works that actively respond to climate change, sea-level rise, natural disaster prevention and control, and reduce flooding when the ground is lowered (due to land subsidence); reducing damage caused by natural disasters (drought, salinity) in the dry season for production models in the region…
