Xiaomi Launches New Electric SUV Brand 'Sky Nomad'

Xiaomi is expanding its electric vehicle lineup with the introduction of a new brand named Sky Nomad. The first model under this brand, the N90, is a full-size SUV that utilizes an Extended Range Electric Vehicle (EREV) powertrain. This new offering is designed for adventure seekers, featuring an integrated rooftop tent that enhances its outdoor capabilities.

The Sky Nomad brand, which translates to 'searching for the sky' in Chinese, embodies the spirit of exploration. The N90 is designed with a sleek aerodynamic profile and comes equipped with a beige tent and a black mosquito net, creating a unique camping experience on the go. The primary target audience for this vehicle includes glamping enthusiasts, as many SUVs in the Chinese market are marketed with camping features, such as fully flat-folding rear seats and AC outlets for household appliances.

According to Car News China, the N90 will be powered by a 1.5L turbocharged gasoline engine that acts as a generator, supplying energy to a battery pack with a capacity exceeding 70 kWh. This configuration allows the vehicle to operate purely on electric power for 400-500 km according to the China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC). However, with the gasoline engine's assistance, the N90 can achieve a range of over 1,500 km.

Xiaomi plans to source 60% of its battery supply from Sunwoda and 40% from CALB, aiming to optimize costs and minimize risks. Previously, the company relied on CATL and FinDreams (part of BYD) for battery supplies for its SU7 and YU7 models. Spy shots of the N90 reveal features like semi-hidden door handles and 19-inch tires, with higher-end versions expected to include larger wheels. The presence of a LiDAR sensor on the roof suggests that the vehicle may be equipped with advanced driver-assistance features.

Additionally, the N90 is anticipated to offer air suspension and rear-wheel steering systems. With a total length exceeding 5,300 mm and a wheelbase of approximately 3,100 mm, the N90 is expected to be available in both five-seat and seven-seat configurations. Reports indicate that the price range for the Sky Nomad N90 will be between 200,000 and 450,000 Chinese Yuan (approximately $29,500 to $66,500), with an official launch anticipated in the last quarter of this year.

In May, Xiaomi delivered 32,759 vehicles in its home market, with the SU7 sedan and YU7 SUV being the only models currently available. Notably, the SU7 was the third best-selling vehicle in China for that month, with 24,023 units delivered.
