Vietnam is embarking on an ambitious project to construct the longest mountain tunnel in the country, specifically through the Hoàng Liên Pass. This significant infrastructure development is expected to cut travel time between Lai Châu and Lào Cai from two hours down to just ten minutes, facilitating better connectivity and economic growth in the region.

The Hoàng Liên mountain tunnel project has a total investment of approximately 3.3 trillion VND (around 140 million USD) and spans nearly 8.8 kilometers in total length. The main tunnel will measure 2.63 kilometers, while a secondary tunnel will be 2.65 kilometers long. Designed to meet the standards of a third-class mountain road, the project will allow for a design speed of 60 km/h and feature a road width of 9 meters, complete with safety measures, drainage systems, and bridges.

This project is considered a key transportation initiative for Lai Châu province, aimed at enhancing regional infrastructure and boosting socio-economic development, tourism, and trade. It also plays a crucial role in ensuring national defense and security while fostering regional connectivity.

As of now, the compensation and resettlement processes in Lai Châu have progressed according to plan, with 100% of the required land area acquired. The relocation of a 35kV power line has been completed, and work on a 110kV line is expected to finish by October 2026. In Lào Cai province, compensation and resettlement efforts are largely free of complications, with parts of the land already recovered to facilitate the construction of access roads and other necessary infrastructure.

Construction began on December 19, 2025, and various contractors are actively working on multiple aspects of the project. The Deoca Group is currently reinforcing the tunnel entrance in Lai Châu, while other contractors are engaged in drilling and constructing supporting structures. However, some project timelines may need adjustments due to challenging construction conditions and adverse weather.

Overall, the Hoàng Liên mountain tunnel is anticipated to be a transformative project that not only improves transportation efficiency but also enhances the overall economic landscape of the northwestern region of Vietnam.
