The Vietnamese Ministry of Education and Training (MoET) is currently seeking feedback on a draft proposal that would significantly alter the entrance examination for 10th-grade students. The proposed change suggests that students will only need to take two subjects: mathematics and literature, as opposed to the traditional three subjects that have included a third subject chosen by local education departments.

This proposal marks a significant shift in the examination process, which has remained largely unchanged for nearly two decades. Previously, students were required to take mathematics, literature, and a foreign language, predominantly English. The new proposal has raised various opinions among students, teachers, and parents, particularly those with children in the 9th grade who are preparing for the upcoming exam.

Many parents expressed concern about the removal of the foreign language component, fearing it might diminish their children's motivation to learn English. One parent, Nguyễn Tường Văn, supported the reduction, stating that it would alleviate pressure on students, as the 10th-grade entrance exam is often seen as more stressful than university entrance exams.

Students have also shared their views. Lê Đan Khánh, a student at Nguyễn Du Middle School in Ho Chi Minh City, mentioned that while the reduction could make the exam less burdensome, they still preferred to have a foreign language included. Another student noted that having a clear goal, such as a foreign language exam, provides motivation to study.

Teachers have voiced mixed opinions as well. Some believe that reducing the number of subjects could relieve stress and allow for a more balanced educational experience. However, they caution that this should not lead to a devaluation of other subjects. A mathematics teacher emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach to education that maintains high standards across all subjects, regardless of whether they are included in the exam.

As the MoET gathers feedback from various stakeholders, including educational institutions and parents, they aim to finalize the regulations for the 2027-2028 academic year. The decision will impact how students prepare for their future studies and the overall educational landscape in Vietnam.
