Rainy Weather Can Aggravate Joint Pain: Tips from Doctors

With the onset of rainy and humid weather, many individuals suffering from joint issues may notice an increase in pain and stiffness. Dr. Le Vu Bao, a specialist at An Sinh General Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City, explains that sudden changes in temperature, humidity, and atmospheric pressure can exacerbate these symptoms.

According to Dr. Bao, cold weather causes blood vessels around the joints to constrict, reducing blood flow and nutrient supply to the joints. This can lead to increased pressure on the joints and hinder mobility. High humidity combined with low temperatures may also thicken joint fluid, resulting in reduced lubrication and increased stiffness and pain during movement.

To manage these symptoms effectively, Dr. Bao suggests maintaining light physical activity indoors, properly warming up, and keeping the body warm. He emphasizes the importance of gentle exercises to relieve pain and stiffness during rainy weather. However, it is crucial to apply these methods correctly and at the right time to avoid worsening the condition.

For instance, when joints are in an acute inflammatory state, characterized by swelling, heat, redness, and pain, patients should avoid using heat packs or vigorous massages, as these can exacerbate inflammation. Instead, applying cold packs is often more suitable. Additionally, individuals with open wounds or infections should refrain from applying heat directly to the affected area.

Dr. Bao advises that while light movement can be beneficial, complete immobilization should be avoided unless directed by a physician, as this can lead to increased stiffness. During unpredictable weather, it is essential to keep warm, engage in moderate exercise, maintain a balanced diet, and manage underlying health conditions to prevent pain and complications.

For those seeking simple at-home exercises, Dr. Bao recommends the following:

  • Ankle and wrist rotations: Sit on a chair or lie on a bed. Rotate the ankle and wrist in a circular motion clockwise for 10 repetitions, then switch directions and repeat.
  • Knee extensions: Sit upright on a high chair. Gradually extend one leg forward, holding for five seconds. Alternate legs and repeat 10 times for each leg.
  • Shoulder and arm stretches: Stand or sit upright, interlock your fingers, and stretch your arms overhead. Hold for 10-15 seconds to stretch the shoulder, back, and arm muscles.

Dr. Bao also notes that while joint pain influenced by weather is typically mild and self-limiting, individuals should seek medical attention if they experience symptoms such as swelling, warmth, redness around the joint, prolonged stiffness in the morning, persistent pain regardless of weather, joint deformities, fatigue, or fever accompanying joint pain.
