Ho Chi Minh City has conducted a review of its administrative units and proposed mergers, including the inclusion of Long Son. However, the city government has opted not to proceed with these changes. Long Son, the only administrative unit from the former Ba Ria-Vung Tau province not undergoing restructuring, is recognized for its strategic location and potential for economic development. It is situated near major transport routes and is known for its traditional aquaculture and eco-tourism.

The area is also home to significant mangrove ecosystems, which play a crucial role in environmental protection and sustainable development. The local government is currently planning to attract environmentally friendly projects to enhance the region's natural resources.

In 2026, Long Son will focus on protecting its mangrove forests, which are vital for biodiversity and climate regulation. The city has also initiated the LNG Long Son power plant project, a significant investment aimed at securing energy for the region. The project is expected to be completed by 2031 and will contribute to the local economy.
