Nancy Lang, a well-known artist and broadcaster, and comedian Lee Hyuk-jae have recently been embroiled in a drunk driving controversy, with both offering similar defenses regarding their actions. The Seoul Gangnam Police Station reported that Nancy Lang was charged with drunk driving early in the morning on September 8, after being found with a blood alcohol concentration at or above 0.08%, which is the threshold for license revocation.
According to police, Nancy was allowed to return home after the incident. In response to the charges, she stated, "There are parts in the currently reported content that differ from the facts. I did not go to the police station after being charged early this morning, nor was I detained or formally charged at a police station." She admitted to having one or two glasses of champagne at a friend's birthday gathering before driving home, acknowledging it was a careless decision on her part.
Nancy's agency, Megaton Entertainment, supported her claims, stating that she was tested for alcohol when she was almost home and that her consumption did not reach intoxication levels. The police have announced plans to investigate the details further.
Simultaneously, Lee Hyuk-jae was also charged with drunk driving after allegedly rear-ending a motorcycle while waiting at a traffic signal on the evening of September 8. His blood alcohol concentration was estimated to be between 0.03% and below 0.08%, which is the level for license suspension. Fortunately, the motorcycle rider was not seriously injured.
In a telephone interview, Lee explained that he had gone to an izakaya near his home and had one or two shots of bomb liquor. He justified driving the short distance home, believing it was safe. Lee described the accident as minor, stating that he had dropped his phone and the car rolled slightly forward, hitting the motorcycle. He reported the incident to the police immediately and expressed his remorse for driving after drinking.
Both Nancy Lang and Lee Hyuk-jae have acknowledged their faults in these incidents, emphasizing the importance of road safety and their willingness to cooperate with the ongoing investigations.
