Nguyen Thi Thu, known as a Heroic Mother of Vietnam, is a poignant symbol of sacrifice and resilience. Hailing from Da Nang, she sent nine sons to war, waiting in vain for their return. The image of her setting nine bowls and chopsticks on the dining table for her fallen sons has become a powerful representation of maternal love and loss in Vietnam.

In a touching tribute during the "Fatherland in Heart" program in Ho Chi Minh City, Nguyen Thi Thu's legacy was highlighted. She was born in 1904 and passed away in 2010 at the age of 106. Throughout her life, she faced the unimaginable pain of losing all nine of her sons, as well as a son-in-law and two grandsons, to the ravages of war.

Her home in Rung village, now part of Da Nang, is adorned with 12 certificates of merit from the state, honoring her sacrifices. Underneath these accolades lies a shrine dedicated to her sons, filled with incense and memories. Her grandson, Le Tu Hiep, recalls the stories of his grandmother's sacrifices, emphasizing the profound impact of her life on his own.

During the war, Nguyen Thi Thu not only raised her children in poverty but also provided shelter for soldiers. She dug five hiding spots in her garden, camouflaging them with trees and livestock, allowing hundreds of soldiers to find refuge. At night, she would light a lamp as a signal for safe passage.

In 1994, she was officially recognized as a Heroic Mother by the President of Vietnam, a title that honors her extraordinary sacrifices. A memorable photograph taken in 2001 by journalist Tran Hong captured her sitting alone before the table set for her sons, an image that evokes deep emotions and has inspired songs and stories about her life.

As Vietnam approaches its National Day, many visit the Heroic Mother Monument in Da Nang to pay their respects. The stories of Nguyen Thi Thu's life and her sacrifices continue to inspire and remind the nation of the profound costs of war. Local officials emphasize the importance of honoring families like hers, embodying the spirit of gratitude and remembrance that defines Vietnamese culture.
