The Ukrainian military announced on August 28 that it had launched an attack that resulted in a fire at a Russian oil refinery located in the Yaroslavl region. According to reports from Reuters, the specific refinery targeted was identified as Slavneft-YANOS, which is one of the largest oil refineries in Russia.

Located approximately 250 kilometers northeast of Moscow and about 700 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, Slavneft-YANOS has an annual processing capacity of around 15 million tons of oil. The attack was carried out using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), although the Ukrainian military did not disclose the name of the refinery at the time of the announcement.

In addition to the refinery strike, Andrei Vorobyov, the governor of the Moscow region, reported that a UAV had also struck a grocery store belonging to the Russian retail chain Magnit in the town of Pavlovsky Posad, causing damage to a nearby medical center. The Russian Defense Ministry claimed that within the same 24-hour period, its forces had destroyed 147 UAV control centers belonging to Ukraine.

Furthermore, the private postal and delivery company Nova Poshta accused Russian attacks of destroying their cargo sorting centers near Kyiv and in the northern city of Sumy. On the same day, The Kyiv Independent reported that Kyiv had experienced 13 air raid alerts within a 24-hour period, marking the highest number of alerts in a single day since the conflict escalated on February 24, 2022. Overall, Kyiv has endured a total of 872 minutes under air raid alerts, according to the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

As of yesterday evening, there had been no official response from either Russia or Ukraine regarding the latest accusations or statements from the opposing side. The ongoing conflict continues to evolve, with both sides engaging in airstrikes aimed at exerting pressure on one another amidst ongoing peace proposals that have yet to find common ground.
